Looking for the perfectly organized closet system? Or want to turn an awkward, underused space into an accessible storage area?
We had a chance to sit down with our friends and home organization experts at Tailored Living of Northern Virginia and Montgomery County to talk closets.
With so many options available today, we wanted to hear what the professionals are recommending for their clients.

1. What are the latest trends we are seeing in 2020?
The trends we are seeing in 2020 really revolve around color. Color is a great way to bring individual style to your solution design. You can go subtle with hardware, or bold with base and facing colors.
In hardware, matte gold and slate are the leading colors this year. They complement any color and add a classy, modern finish.
We are also seeing beautiful plays on color with all of our organization solutions. Cabinets with different color drawers or door facings really give a signature style to the design. Mixing colors and textures for solutions that bring a focal point to your space. A good example is within a built-in where a contrasting color complements the overall design of the room.
Another major design trend we are seeing is in mudroom design. Shifting how the space is utilized can transform the functionality of the room. We are seeing a move away from traditional cubby style wall organization and towards a more open space for hanging items with above and below cabinet storage. Island style cabinets and benches are also being added to for comfort.

2. What are the biggest mistakes in home organization?
We find that hanging space is often misunderstood or overlooked. You can really increase a smaller closet by installing rods for double hanging space. You don’t have to start with a major project to bring organization to your home. The reach-in closet is the “gateway” closet. More homeowners are starting their organization journey with hall closets. Adding a few shelves, and an extra hanging rod allows for more items to be stored in small spaces. Having a place for jackets, bags, and shoes keeps clutter at bay. A tidy main floor is a great place to start for a calm, organized home.

3. Splurge or Save? Where to spend your budget.
Splurge on lighting. Custom lighting brings an added elegance to your closet as well as functionality. We have some amazing lighting options to create a luxurious atmosphere. Our designers can place the right light with the best wattage to give your space the perfect feel. Lighted shelving, rods, or puck lighting … whatever your style, lighting is our favorite upgrade.
Save with rods. Air costs less. What do we mean by that? Install double hanging space instead of built-in shelving to stay within budget. You still maximize your wall space, but for less.
Save with white. Going with our standard white base opens your budget to add more custom accessories and upgrade your hardware, so you can have more custom features that work best for your personal organization needs.

4. What are your favorite accessories for 2020?
Adding a few accessories to your closet design will enhance your organization and make it uniquely yours. A few of our favorites:
A nested jewelry tray is a gorgeous home for your go-to accessories. Never have to look for that missing earring or untangle your favorite necklace again. All your jewelry will have a place and be ready to wear.
A pull-out hamper to keep things tidy. They tuck right into the design and easily roll out. No more laundry piles to step over!
A rotational mirror that will let you check out all the angles and find that perfect outfit.
A pull-out ironing board to touch up stubborn wrinkles. It slides out of a pop down drawer and rotates 180 degrees.

5. If I were Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) from Sex and the City, how would you organize and showcase all of my expensive my shoes?
We have a myriad of shoe storage solutions for your most beloved accessory. A glamorous display case with lighted glass shelving will let you sit back and admire your collection. Individual shoe cubbies or pull out racks that give you more storage space… which means more SHOES! Whatever your style, we can design a custom closet that will make Miranda envious.
Whether you’re measuring the closet space in your new custom home or getting ready to turn an extra bedroom into a walk-in closet, Tailored Living can create the ultimate storage solutions for your family.
